Abstract

This is an update to The European Human Rights System, which described the founding, development, and bibliography of the Council of Europe (COE), the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (ECHR), and the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). It describes what has happened between the publication of that article in 2010 and the end of 2014. This update covers the alleviation of the pressures on the European Court of Human Rights, improvements in the publication and dissemination of the ECtHR’s documents, the Draft Treaty of Accession, and the case that is a barrier to accession.
